What is Wellness Overflow?

Welcome! Wellness Overflow is a newly founded virtual wellness community with weekly newsletters by Yael Weisblum. Hopefully, you are also feeling bombarded by the overflow of wellness trends coming to the surface of your social media feed. As a young writer, I constantly encounter new health and wellness ideas that leave me questioning whether these “healthy practices” are wise wellness choices. Or am I being brainwashed by the latest influencers to believe so? With the control health influencers from Gwyneth Paltrow to Mark Hyman have over online users, it is hard not to fall into the traps of the wellness spell. The consumption of  content on social media is changing the narrative of how we see health today as we are exposed to new ideas rapidly. Where do we draw the line on the evolving trends is a question I find myself asking. While I am inclined to try and explore new wellness ideas, I find the overabundance of health content scary and honestly exhausting at times to keep up.

When we think of wellbeing, we imagine a lifestyle filled with happiness, nourishment and feeling our best selves, but are these new wellness ideas setting us up for the way of life we envision?

Wellness Overflow is a space that will dissect the latest wellness and beauty trends that are sparking discussions amongst social media with hopes of navigating this crazy environment we now live in, the social media haze. I will analyze current wellness events, interview guests, and discuss the health content appearing on your social media feeds. I started Wellness Overflow because I wanted to create a community for wellness lovers surrounded by the extremities of wellness culture and looking to find a safe space to learn the truths behind the content we are displayed with.

About Yael Weisblum

Hi, I am Yael Weisblum, a recent undergraduate student at McGill University in the faculty of arts. I am a wellness junkie who is always learning about the next trend and news that is shaping the health space. From a young age, I have had an interest in food, beauty and fashion, leading me to explore the complicated yet captivating world of wellness. I believe that maintaining a well-rounded life requires lasting habits that allow you to feel your best. To me, the pillars of wellness are emotional, environmental and social health; each must be strong to live a healthy life. While I am an active user on social media, I often get pulled into the allure of influencers shaping my ideas on health today. Through my active time on social media I have learnt that the health and beauty content that I am exposed to can be influential but needs to be taken with a grain of salt as if taken to the extreme we run the risk of jeopardizing our wellbeing. My passion for healthy living allows me to be curious analyzing the up-and-coming health ideas throughout the media. As a social media user I am observant on what comes across my feed and not afraid to challenge notions that are dangerous and unsustainable to the three pillars of wellness.
